I can sympathize, I had two experiences with loose truck wheels.
The first was while I was driving north on a divided highway with the south bound lanes above us. I saw a loose truck wheel/tire coming down the hill and thought some poor guy lost a wheel. Then I had the realization that a 200-300 lb wheel was coming at me at a closing speed of ~ 110 mph and the guard rail wasn't gonna stop it. I floored the gas just before the wheel hit the guard rail and became airborne, I went under the wheel. Looking in the rear view mirror, it impacted the following car dead center between the front seats. Wasn't pretty, tire embedded in vehicle.
The second was while I was driving a truck. I was passed by a wheel. After a second I realized it was off my truck. Oddly, I was headed south on the same road mentioned above. I stopped, recovered the wheel, limped to the berm and radioed for help.
