CaptainGyro,

Based on my father's comments from WWII, there must be MANY such heroes. = He said that during WWII, putting in a serviceman for a medal (even THE medal) was a really LOW priority because of mission constraints, members who were KIA (and thus unavailable to be questioned about a valorous act) OR simply because in "the fog of war" witnesses disappeared before they could be identified.

Yep, my father in law ran an infantry company for Patton and received a Silver and a Bronze; one in Germany and the other in France.

Said they were being given out like Cracker Jack prizes by the end of the war.

He got them for doing a couple of times what his men did... all day, every day.

We will indeed never see their like again.

What got my goat was when my middle son received a Bronze Star but his LT got a Silver. More than once I saw officers treated differently than the Snuffies who were at the same dance.

csmkersh,

100% TRUE. = RANK should have NOTHING to do with receiving awards for BRAVERY.
(Fyi, Mike Papas often get NO awards, inasmuch as often senior officers DESPISE the MPC & down the awards to a much lower level or simply "lose the paperwork".)

One of the SGT/E5 that worked for our team "way down yonder" saved another soldier's
life.

The young SGT's proposed award was "downgraded" from SOLDIER's MEDAL (for saving the other SM's life from drowning) to a "Joint Services Achievement Medal" by "higher HQ".
