In another thread Snake broached this mattered:

The growth of the federal law enforcement bureaucracy has jumped dramatically over the last 20 years. There are now 73 federal agencies that have armed officers, often called "special agents." And all of these agencies now cordon off and enforce a federal fiefdom of the more than 4,500 criminal laws at the federal level and thousands of additional regulations that have sprung up in recent decades.

That's the domestic armed force that Maobama talked about (once, before his handlers told him to STFU about that) in the 2008 campaign.

About 3 years ago I was driving through Wyoming when I ran into a convoy of those urban armored vehicle the Department of Homeland Security bought. They were complete with mounted machine guns. As I recall there were about six of them, I have no idea where they were going. By the way I am not a conspiracy nut.

Why does the Department of Railroad Retirement need a SWAT team?
Why does the Department of Education need Remington 870P Police shotguns?
Why does the EPA need a SWAT team armed with full-auto weapons?

There are WAY too many Federal agencies with armed agents that have no business being armed.
Then too, a few too many can't seem to remember not to leave weapons in their cars to be stolen.

It's largely a matter of bureaucratic one oneupmanship. One department gets neat weapons so you're department needs to keep up with the Joneses.
Once you have all the neat toys and have sunk millions of tax dollars in training, there's a push to justify it all by using it.
That's how you wind up with a full-on early morning Federal SWAT raid on a house having an innocent man in his underwear handcuffed in the back of a car for hours while his children are terrorized, all over UNPAID STUDENT LOANS by a person who didn't even live there.
As usual, no apology and no one gets disciplined.

dfariswheel; All,

WHY does the Department of Agriculture need heavily armed "special agents", given that when questioned by a Congressional committee that the Secretary couldn't even say what they were supposed to do OR what several million dollars had been spent by their agents to do?? = The USDA "special agents", like any number of other such groups, seem to have NO legitimate function.

The last time that I counted, there were 81 federal agencies/departments with their own armed LEO.

Personally, I think that we should ABOLISH all but TWO federal LE agencies AND place those two big agencies under the AOUSC. = I suggest the USMS & the USPS criminal inspectors, as they are mentioned in the very early documents of the USA.
(It makes NO difference WHICH badge/credential that a PO carries. )

ABOLISHING all those other agencies & folding the best agents of all those 80+ agencies into just 2 (or possibly 3) agencies would save MANY BILLIONS of dollars each year in "administrative costs".

yours, sw

Back about 1982 the NRA had convinced Congress to disband the ATF. But two things quickly became apparent:

1. The NRA would no longer have a cash cow to milk. :(

2. No other federal agency. especially not the FBI, was willing to take in the agents.

The NRA and Congress agree to forget the whole thing.

csmkersh,

TWO of THREE of the comments in your post are 100% FACTUAL. = The NRA did NOT try to stop the BATFE from being disbanded.
(I was working in DC with USACIDC & was "seconded to" JADST at the time.)

It is absolutely TRUE that the FBI wouldn't accept the majority of BATFE "special" agents.
(IF you were in charge of the FBI would you want that bunch of "lying cowboys"? - The Inspector of the USMS, who was in control of our piece of JDST, absolutely REFUSED to have any BATFE people in his branch UNLESS he could personally "vet" each of them.)

In short, "we have to keep these goosestepping SS-Einsatzgruppen jackboots on the payroll here because no other legitimate employer will hire the Nazi Bastard wastes of viable organs and we don't want them free to pursue less-legitimate employment."

Sound about right?

Every damn day I fear more and more that the day Uncle Frank warned of draws nigh... :(
