Do you have any idea of the date of that piece?

Back in the 60s the USAF tested a pistol firing rounds. I have one somewhere.

I haven't heard of a 50, but the pistol had a rotating system similar. But I think the whole thing died long ago.

Actually, the Dardick family is still trying to promote the design. They even received additional patents with the past few years.

The concept keeps popping up like a bad penny. I believe that the US Navy was playing with the .50 cal. Tround machinegun shown back in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

The USAF played with Tround Gatling guns during the 1960s. The TRW HIVAP could achieve a ridiculously high cyclic rate of ~30,000 rpm by virtue of its multiple feed positions and open chambers. Don Stoehr believed that by tweaking the feed, he'd be able to increase the rate of fire up to 42,000 rpm.

Charlie, if I could afford to feed the monster I don't think I'd have to worry about were to store the ammo. I might make Mike's place look tiny.

The HIVAP weapon pod under design only held either 3,000 or 6,000 trounds. That wasn't going to last long at the lower rate of 30,000 rpm.

Out of curiosity, I decided to check to see if DTIC.mil had any HIVAP reports declassified, and I was rewarded with this.

In this report, the HIVAP was credited with 36,000 rpm, firing a 50 grain flechette at 4,800 fps. (Actually, it might be closer to a 35gr flechette with a 15gr sabot.)

I also found reference to the Cal. .50 tround evaluated by the US Navy. Note that it was promoted by the British firm Lucas Aerospace. Folks might remember that their sister company, Lucas Electric, was once nicknamed "The Prince of Darkness" for their shoddy electrical systems.
