WASHINGTON (AP) - Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Army's flagship hospital where privates to presidents have gone for care, is closing its doors after more than a century.

Hundreds of thousands of the nation's war wounded from World War I to today have received treatment at Walter Reed, including 18,000 troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

President Dwight Eisenhower died there. So did Gens. John J. Pershing and Douglas MacArthur.

The facility dates from 1909 with various buildings completed throughout its history. Some of these buildings were constructed before there was a radiology department, before CAT scan machines, before MRI machines, before air conditioning and most of them before computer networks became standard. The wiring and plumbing that was installed fifty years ago is not adequate to support a modern hospital. The new tenants can renovate the facility and like the linked article says, the DOD can build a state of the art facility.
