Guys, looks like my somewhat undeserved reputation for being an "expert" has gotten me into trouble again... For the record, I've always tried to dispel that myth, and point out that my strength is not *having* answers but rather going out to trawl archives/libraries/etc. and pick SMEs' brains and *get* the answers people need. Anyway, that overinflated rep I've built has me needing expert opinions, so I'm turning to some of the best hardware folks I know to ask a favor, awkward as it is.
Anyway, one of the developers on a space-combat sim I'm doing alpha-testing on has been picking my brain, and since I noticed that their stats on the game's ballistic weapons are all over the map--they've got five sizes with three basic styles (M61A1-type 6+-barrel, M197-type 3-barrel, and single large bore), and their ammunition sizes are all over the map, so we're trying to work up a more logical system with hopefully fewer "moving parts" they'll have to code.
For reference, the medium fighters in the game scale out at around 75' both length and span--the biggest bore they have so far is a single-tube 106mm at Size 4 out of 5 possible, which I'm trying to educate them about just how big that is and how you wouldn't just strap a light howitzer or medium-heavy MBT gun onto a fighter-type craft no matter how much power it has and how much a fan of "Bigger = Better, Rule of Cool" one may be.
Any of you guys up for taking a look at some numbers and helping me slot things in for "how NATO would do this"?
