What DON'T you like about your carry gun?

I posted this on another forum, but I think this group wold be much more interesting to hear from...

So we all like to brag on our favorite handguns, so let's take it another way...what DON'T you like about your primary carry gun?

I carry the S&W M1911PD (Lightweight Commander). I don't like the beavertail that S&W has chosen, kind of a Wilson-ish copy. I much prefer the Ed Brown.

And while I like a black gun for self defense, I'll admit that I've never seen a better finish for a daily carry gun than hard chrome...I may hard chrome my blaster at some point. I'll be doing some Ceracoat in the coming weeks, I may just Ceracoat it in the interim...just depends on if I get a wild hair.

I think S&W could have done better on their choice of finish (blue/anodized). Guns that are in and out of a holster on a daily basis will wear finish pretty quickly.

I don't like that it came with a FLGR, but I corrected that.

Little gripes aside, I'm happy with the gun and it has performed flawlessly thus far.

Back in the late 1960s I used to load 200 gr in .357. Back in 2009 I finally clocked some (around 850 f/s). I hate to think what kind of velocities they produced in .38 Spl.

I did notice that they tended to tumble in test media.
I'm Mostly Happy...

...with the pair of S&W 640-1's, with their custom-carved Craig Spegel Boot Grips, that I carry on the belt. However, if the factory had machined dovetails for sight mounting - as they have done with a Pro Series version offered with night sights fore and aft - I'd be able to get Tim Sheehan to install his HexSite Sighting System, making them about as close to perfect for my needs as I can imagine.

I'd like to try one of those.
I remain dubious of such sighting systems. If it was truly either more accurate, or faster, or both; you'd see the top competitive shooters using it, but you don't. If it works for someone, I think that's great. I have no problem with such a system, I've used ghost rings and I find they work well. No better, no worse; they just work.

Don't know how a hex would be significantly different from a ghost ring; they would still work along the same principles.

Personally, I have found a traditional sight picture with the rear sight opened up generously gives me the best of both worlds. I have enough light coming in on either side that I can find the front sight quickly and easily. And when I slow down, the square sides mated up to the square post allows me to ensure I have equal amounts of light on either side to make precise shots all the way out to 150 yards. I can also raise up a touch of front sight for longer shots, and I haven't figured out how to do that with ghost ring systems.

Feel Free to Remain Dubious...

I have no stake - financial or otherwise - in the operation. I can tell you that the biggest boosters seem to be some of the cops and agencies that use them. "Rumor has it" that some of the military folks who have tested the dual-aperture system on M4's have been very happy with it but, until funding is found to engineer and produce adjustable mounting bases, it's not ready for prime time in that venue.

As I said, feel free to remain dubious but, if you'd like to do a real evaluation, feel free to contact Tim to see if he's got anyone near you who can let you try it.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program...
Assuming That...

I'd like to try one of those.
...you're referring to the HexSite, try contacting Tim and mentioning my name (Stephen Wenger). He may have a customer near you who will let you try one. Most people who use the HexSite become pretty devoted to it.

At this time, Tim sells a DIY kit for Glocks and requires you to send him any other pistol for him to do the installation. (If you don't have to pay for shipping, it's not a bad idea for him to install the DIY kit for you.)

Because of the requirement for a female dovetail fore and aft, if you don't have one of those rare revolvers so fitted, you're pretty much limited to pistols as Tim will not cut a dovetail into the receiver of a revolver, even if the manufacturer may have done the same for a special run.
Guess I'm the odd duck here in that I have several guns I carry both on duty and off.

Guess my primary carry gun is my Kimber Super Carry Pro. Aluminum frame, 4" barrel, rounded butt, big visible night sights, great trigger out of the box, reliable, accurate and 45 ACP.

I also use a S&W Model 60-10 .357; stainless, 3" barrel, adjustable sights (front sight has a tritium insert) and a pretty decent trigger out of the box. It's a Pro Series, so I don't know if they pay special attention to the trigger on those or it was just luck of the draw. The only improvement I would make Is to elnarge the sights. The factories are serviceable, but my getting old eyes could use a little help.

I recently bought and qualified with a S&W Shield in 9mm. It carries easy, has pretty good sights and is accurate enough for me - I only dropped one round on qualifying, and that was at the 25 yard line. I would like to get the trigger on that one smoothed out if not lightened. A 6 or 7 lb pull on a 19 ounce gun means I have to concentrate real hard on trigger squeeze ( I know...poor me).

My BUG is my S&W 442-2

I don't like that the 1911 has a laeft-hander's magazine catch and a right-hander's thumb safety and ejection.

Other than that, I carry mine daily without a problem, just means I have to choose between a slightly slower Condition One readiness or going to safety-off empty-chamber Condition Three.
How is the magazine catch a "laeft"-hander's ?

It is operated with the thumb of the right hand.
WaltGraham,

You bring up again a point that I have several times pondered. = IF the LEO takes a person's firearm in a "good shooting" as "evidence" in a police investigation and the citizen has NO other suitable firearm, has society not left an innocent person defenseless against other possible violence?
(Btw, several peer-reviewed studies indicate that a person who has HAD to defend him/herself against an armed criminal is 2-4 times MORE likely to have to AGAIN defend him/herself from yet another act of violence.)

Therefore does the police agency have a responsibility to either provide the citizen another suitable firearm (OR to provide the citizen protective services until their firearm is returned) so that the involved citizen is NOT left DEFENSELESS???

Believe it or not ... about 12 years ago I got a call around 10:30 PM from a local cop that I am friends with ... seems that a person had to shoot a person in their home .. and they had to take his firearm ... and the person that was shot happened to have been the son of the imprisoned leader of the local Motorcycle gang/club ..

The cop asked me if A) he could have the guy come down at 7:30am to get another firearm B) he explained the details (which I won't get into here) and asked that I have a long talk/lecture with the guy over the error of his ways [carrying FMJ 230gr .. firing a warning shot .... gut shooting the guy vs center of mass or at the close range they were at center of the skull!].

The guy was there at 7:30 and did not leave until around 9 after I had a long heart to heart explaining everything that was done wrong!

CDM, I think Diamondback is probably left handed, operating the mag release with the forefinger of his shooting hand. So the mag release is perfect for a lefty, but the standard thumb safety is strictly a righty thing.

Thanks, IC, beat me to the punch. Yes, I am a southpaw. Mag catch and slide release both, which I find to also have a benefit in enforcing the "Off Target, Off Trigger" rule. :)
My favorite is still my Colt Government Model I bought as a promotion gift from me to me when I made SSgt/E6. Paid a whole $105 new in box with a local gun runner who had retired and sold a few guns at his saddle shop. For years it was bos stock but in 1996 when Texas got its concealed carry up and running I had the trigger, sear, hammer and backstrap replaced. It was a A1 so I went back to the flat 1911 backstrap. For a while it had a full length guide rod but I think it was Charlie who convinced me that Browning knew what he was doing and went back to the factory rod. The stocks are Herrett. I operate the mag release with my trigger finger and added ambi-safety since I'm left handed.

Sounds like a darned nice gun.

If I had to sell everything off, I'd have a VERY hard time deciding which to stick with. My "pretty" .38 Super which I love and shoot best. Or my very practical LW .45 Commander which is not pretty, but extremely practical. Let's hope I never have to choose between the two.

To me the LW Commander is just the most carry friendly full size pistol out there. Next would be the Hi Power, and then 3rd on my list is the full size government. My Super is kinda dolled up with Nitre Blued accents and real elephant ivory grips and a custom made by me rear sight (that I'm not quite happy with yet)...almost qualifies as a BBQ gun. But it's a working gun, I carry it from time to time and it even has holster wear. I just don't have use for a safe queen.

Sam I'll bet that old Govt Model you have is a very nice pistol.
csmkersh,

Fwiw, I'm old enough to remember when .45ACP Government Models "routinely traded for" 30-75.oo in good used condition. - Of course in those long-gone days/DAZE, I was making 220.12 a month as a GI.
(I paid 60,oo for my US&S 1911A1 in "near new" condition.)

Further I once bought a "non-catalogued" Colt's Gold Cup in .38SUPER in the box for 110.oo at the BIG Dallas gun-show at Market Hall.
(I gave that one to my uncle at Christmas of 1972 & after his death his wife sold it to her pastor for TWENTY-FIVE BUCKS!!!!! = [email protected]#$%^!)

Oh yeah, the good ole days. I think you're a bit older than I am...I bought my Inland Carbine for about $125.00; it's worth over a grand now (not that I'd ever part with it). I worked for one of the importers of the Chinese Norinco AK's, we were selling them wholesale for $249 when we brought them in. They go for around $1200-$1800 depending on which configuration.

My first handgun was a S&W M19 with all the options (target trigger, target hammer, red ramp, white outline); paid $169.00 for it brand new.

I could go on.
KevinGibson,

Some of the other "EOF" here know that my FIRST center-fire handgun (My dad had given me a Colt's Woodsman for my 16th birthday.) was a PRE-WWII .38SPL revolver, with holster, Sam Browne belt, handcuffs, cuff-case, etc. for FORTY BUCKS with a 1/2 box of shells.
(I was in NOV 1965 a "red-hot 18YO rookie" Deputy Constable & my MOTHER had to buy my revolver/ammo for me, so that I could "start work". = I liked to have NEVER "lived that down", as I think that the owner of People's Hardware told EVERYBODY in the county about my mother riding the Greyhound bus to town, so that she could buy it.)

Btw, the Sheriff gave me a copy of the State Penal Code, a "sawed off" Parker 10gauge DB, "a tin star" & a county credit card (for gas, oil, tires, etc.), shook my hand, wished me LUCK and sent me out to enforce the law in Pct.3.
(In those long-ago days/DAZE, city/county officers had NO police academy to go to. - New LEO "learned by doing".)
I'm ashamed now to tell anyone about my "fumbling about" trying to enforce the law, as I had essentially NO HELP in that BIG but sparsely populated Pct. - I didn't even HAVE a "county 2-way radio" for nearly a year & carried a roll of dimes to call the SO for "back-up", from a pay-phone!!!!

Note: My "first real case" (I suspect that every LEO remembers their "first case".) was reported to me on my home phone about 0400 on 08NOV65. = It was the night-time theft of HALF of a "Winter pig" from a small farm "out on the Katy Road".
(Fwiw, I caught the 2 thugs "red-handed", arrested them, testified against them & they got 120 days "hoeing vegetables" on the prison farm, for "theft over 50.oo".)
My college-GF was a reporter on the local newspaper & you'd have thought that I was Sherlock Holmes from the "write up" that she got published that Friday!!!
(I never got "GOOD PRESS" like that ever again in 3 decades of "being pinned to a star". = CHUCKLE.)

In my family, if a gun is given as a gift, it is considered poor form to let it leave the family unless no one wants it. Generally the giver is first in line.
Talk about being thrown into the deep end...
SW,
Now we have college educated officers who pass all sorts of State local and insurance related training courses, and they still screw up big time.

I remember growing up with a small town police department, where we all knew the officers names, even the part timers.

Who wonders how they test for people relations which seems to be more important than a paper, well, electronic now days, test.

Paraphrase Bill Cosby, that wasn't the aunt you grew up with, that was an old lady trying to get into heaven.
