now I havnt been out shooting in some time now and I figured. its about time I went out . had a hell of a time finding 22 rounds. now I might be reporting something everyone is aready aware of. if so you have my appoligies. the wall mart I went to said there was a shortage on 22 shells but I did get about a hun rounds. thought to my self hell I will just go on line and find some there. went to midway and holy [email protected]#[email protected]#. theses only one brand available and you can only order 2 boxes. hmmmm. went to find out why and this is what I found on field and stream......


Upsetting Update - Did some local research to find out why Bass Pro, Wal-Mart, Dicks, didn't have ammo...the answers were aggrivating to say the least. What's happening is we're all willing to pay too much for AMMO. When I asked folks at the local retail shops what happens when ammo arrives, they said "local Gun Shop owners and their employees are standing in line"...yes, your friendly local Gun Shop Owners. When I asked one of these owners, he said "yep, I just spent 250,000 dollars on retail ammo and am reselling it online and at the store".... So, as long as we are willing to pay 30.00 a box for 22lr, these folks will be first in line to clean off the retail shelfs so they can resell it to you. SPREAD THE WORD - DON'T PAY THESE PRICES, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR LOCAL GUN SHOPS ARE THE ONES STICKING IT TO YA...

I have a friend who owns a big shop and he has told me several times that folks bring ammo that just bought at Walmart to sell him.

I have a feeling there are some hoards out there like King Tut's tomb.

I remember similar stuff during the 1990s with the "Banned" stuff.

It is kind of like the Stock market, if you buy at the highest and stash it away, then the price comes down, what happens? Well, you still have ammo of course.

Charlie and dave I was dumdfounded. I don't remember it ever happening before. The lowes people will go never stops amassing me . I am cheep as all get out. They have a better chance of seeing god than see me pay that kind of money for 22 shells. Hell that's why I bought the dam 22 in the first place. Can't afford $20 for 20 rounds of other weapons I have. For sure I'm not going out for the entire day unless I am bringing a 22. Lol I'm ranting again. Sorry

Actually it happens fairly regularly... usually because of some event that makes people think guns, ammo, or components will be banned or further restricted.

The restriction on magazine capacity or the assault weapons ban created panic buying and profiteering based on supply and demand. Obama has been the best salesman the firearms industry has ever seen.

And of all the rounds to do it to. My Winchester pump .22's and my K-22 are my absolute favorite guns. Blasphemy not shooting them.

When the rimfire market returns to rationality, it will probably do so rapidly. I can envision a "perfect storm" of circumstances occurring that will see .22LR return to the shelves almost overnight:

-the 24/7 shifts the manufacturers have been running start to fill the supply chain
-the hoarders start to see the profit potential dry up as retailers receive more timely shipments
-the upcoming election proves to Democrats (again) that gun control is a loser

A year ago this time you had to struggle to find 5.56 ammo or hi-cap mags; now, they're having fire sales on both. With the exception of pistol powder, most reloading components are back. AR lower receivers have returned to commodity pricing, and fully built rifles seem to be headed that way. Rimfire can't be far behind.

I think you're right.

A couple of years ago .380 ACP seemed to disappear overnight. There wasn't a political cause so the most likely reason is the introduction of good locked breech pistols by Ruger and S&W.

The problem was short lived and the bottom dropped out of the inflated prices. Some hoarders lost their shirts.

The rimfire situation now is very different and there really is no credible explanation other than hoarding. A friend in the industry told me that CCI had raised the price of normal rimfire ammo by 0.10/box. Normally other producers follow the same path.

It is entirely possible that the major distributors added substantial increases and dealers did too. Most places where I see long rifle for sale are asking $5/50.

So the real bottom line is the consumer's behavior. If we stop panic buying the price HAS to come down

I really think once we have a Republican president, it will return to normal. There is a 50% chance that it will return to normal when the republicans take the senate, but that we'll see how smart the hoarders really are.

I'm pretty sure I was in the top 1% of rimfire ammo purchasers before the panic; I've done my part in not contributing to the panic, but I'm out of CCI Mini-Mags.
