We went from the M1 to the M14 when I was in Germany about 1962 or so. We received no training or instructions for the M14s One day we had M1s the next we had M14s. They were enough alike that it didn't cause any problems that I'm aware of. Although when you did inspection arms you had to press the bolt stop with your thumb in order to get the bolt to stay open.

Of course, by the time you got the M14, it would have taken a singularly dumb soldier to let his thumb get smashed.

(the one that i borrowed one year, when i was OCONUS, was more accurate than i could hold it, out to 400M.- it had been rebuilt for Nigeria's army.)

I remember seeing a "Tanker" Garand so customized. I was able to handle it, but sadly, not shoot it. The wholesaler I was working for was selling a collection of mil-style weapons.

I had a BM59 SW sold it to a fella on the board at Quanitco back in 2007 I think.The only part that was SF was the barrel the rest was Beretta.

BM 59's are uber-cool!! They go for huge bucks anymore though. I always thought the BM 59 handled better than the 14.

Kevin sold mine what I paid a year/2 later Reese stopped making them up price went up a 1G quick.I like the rifle had much the mystique of the G43 at the range but wished on many occassion I had held on to the girl for I saw money someshere down the road but the shop called alittle to early.

NOPE. = the BM-59 used a "especial", rather than the standard M-14, magazine that is "hard to come by" & it's $$$$, if/when you find one for sale.

Nigeria called their "restyled" Garand/M-14 "hybrid": the NG64. - I have NO CLUE what the Beretta folks called it BUT I surely wish that I had bought one, circa 1970, when they were CHEAP.
(I wonder how hard it would be to "recreate" the NG64, with a 7.62x51MM Beretta "parts kit" from J&G, some M-14 mags & a "surplus" Garand receiver, as all the "originals" that I've seen in the last few years are EXPENSIVE???)

pity the us has the stupid rule banning the re-importation of American weapons and the batf is so narrow minded- and the Canadian government for that matter- back in the day isreal was selling uzis , stens, fnfals, and m14s as surplus for a dime on the dollar- some of these were still brand new in cosmo or whatever - I was able to get my hands on a springy, h&r, and trw-then our government went and prohibited them b/c of the batf defined them as machine guns even with the lug removed( m14 owners know what i'm talking about-)but left the door open for m1as AND didn't count on the Chinese getting involved- so in Canada, you can still have your m14,you just have to settle for Chinese( which aren't too bad these days) or put a different non-banned receiver it- like an lrb or whatever.

I dunno. I happen to have one I bought in April, 2013. It seems to be well made. It has the synthetic stock which could be fitted a smidgen better up front but otherwise works... sorta wonder if I'd prefer a wood stock except for the inevitable dings it would pick up.
I REALLY love the sights on the M1A.
.223 (or in my case 5.56mm.) is fine too; I have two M4orgeries to feed. A lighter weapon is sometimes nice.

aside from looks, i'd take a WELL-MADE synthetic over wood any day- wood swells and galls, and that;s the reason the m14 went to synthetic in the first place-

I have a Boyd's Laminate stock but the little girl spends most her time in the birch stock seems more accurate things seem to float.

When I got my M1A, I swapped the 'full' (or 'heavy') stock for a slim GI tropical wood stock. At some point, I will get a fiberglass GI stock, like the M14 I was issued in '75.

The front needs to be loose and non binding for the barrel to fully float it seems.The Boyds was tight on the front band when I first got it and bullets sprayed all over I finally figured it out and started cutting/whittle the front band area but I think maybe more could be done.I P/U a WWII rear bar sight off an old Winnie that was a parade rifle and dropped it on the M1a I like it even more than the orginal.TG next to my M1 carbine for close quarters being my favorite the M1a is for reaching out is my favorite
