Welcome - dunno if RAJ is a Zevon fan, but Fernando is - and me too for that matter... But then again, I'm just an excitable boy ;)

Welcome to the board, Snake. Your Glock opinion won't meet with too much oposition here.
Yes, I am a Zevon fan. I still haven't decided which is my favorite song, though:
Werewolves of London
Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner
Lawyers, Guns, and Money
Nightime in the Swithing Yard
Snake45 - welcome to the forum and as Walt pointed out, I'm a Zevon fan. Don't have one favorite song, just like all his work.

Roland THTG
Lawyers, Guns & Money
Accidentally Like a Martyr
Veracruz
OK, all of the Excitable Boy album.
The Envoy
Desperadoes Under the Eaves
Mohammed's Radio
Wow, who'd a guessed I would have uncovered a nest of WZ fans on a gun board! Although you guys are citing mainly stuff from his early work. Didja know he sang about Glocks in the 1995 song Rottweiler Blues?

"Got a Glock in the bedside table
Machine gun leaning by the bedroom door
Kevlar vest in the closet
I wear it when I go to the store...."

The song's a tribute to his friend Hunter S. Thompson.

I like all the WZ songs mentioned so far, but my favorites are probably:

Roll with the Punches
Boom Boom Mancini
Jungle Work
Figurine (never released, only available on concert bootleg)
Splendid Isolation
Down in the Mall
Hostage-O
Stand in the Fire
Dirty LIfe and Times
Mohammed's Radio
Johnny Strikes Up the Band
Model Citizen
Piano Fighter
Something Bad Happened to a Clown
Poisonous Lookalike

Oh hell, I like them ALL!

We'll not see his like again.

Yep, that was from his Mutineer album.

I've been building up a CD collection of his music ever since it started coming out on CDs. So far I have the following:
  • Warren Zevon (from Elektra Entertainment)
    Excitable Boy
Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School
    Wanted Dead Or Alive
    Transverse City
    Sentimental Hygiene
A Quiet Normal Life - The Best of Warren Zevon
    Mutineer
    Learning to Flinch
    Hit Somebody
I'll Sleep When I'm Dead - An Anthology
    Life'll Kill Ya
    My Ride's Here
Genius - The Best of Warren Zevon (from Rhino)
    The Wind
I still have a bunch of his albums, including The Envoy, and a cassette version of Mr. Bad Example. Need to get them both on CD, too.

It's just a shame more people didn't know about Warren Zevon. It took him leaving us for the major magazines and media to take notice.

Here are some Zevon related links to threads from our forum worth checking out:

Sounds like you have pretty much everything available on CD except MBE, which is sort of rare these days. Envoy and SITF have never been on CD so if you see CDs of those, they're fakes. They're both supposed to be reissued next year, though.

There's a tribute album coming out, supposedly by the end of the year. And then there's supposed to be a four-CD box set of "rarities" including some stuff never before released. I'm hoping there will be a version of Figurine on that. That's a great song.

I have a friend in Australia who put together a three-CD set of nothing but WZ doing covers of other songs in concert--everything from Buddy Holley's Not Fade Away to Dylan's All Along the Watchtower and Dwight Yoakum's Santa Can't Stay. Great set!

Did you ever get to see him? I'm glad to be able to say I saw him twice. I came to the party late--didn't become a major fan until about 1996 or so.

Ah, yes....Mr. Bad Example. Man, that songs just slays me every time I hear it!
Snake45 - I really hope his son continues pushing the Zevon legacy. Rarities and never before released stuff would be great on CD. What would be even better would be DVDs of his concerts. I have a VHS copy of one that was supposedly put out by VH1 years ago. Whether that’s true or not, the copy is decent and seeing him in concert is a treat.

I’ve been listening to him since ‘82/83. He played in a nightclub in Poughkeepsie called “The Chance” in the eighties and I was supposed to go see him but didn’t. Can’t recall why I didn’t go, but I always told myself I’d see him another time. Then the years went by, time constraints grew and so did the family. I always kept listening to his stuff and picked up CDs whenever they came out. The next time I read about him, it was the article about him having cancer and only months to live. I should have never waited.

Richard Jefferies – That’s definitely one of the classics!

I was in college when Werewolves of London hit the charts. It brings back a lot of memories.

For years, though, I thought the pina colada drinker's hair was purple.
JR, you're not the only one who thought his hair was "purple." That one ranks right up there with "'Scuse me while I kiss this guy."

I had to drive to Charleston yesterday (140 miles,) and was listening to Zevon's "Best of" CD. When it got to Mr. Bad Example, I set the player to repeat and listened to it for about 60 miles.
Hmmmmm, never heard of the guy, but now I need to go download some of his stuff & see what all this is about. With recommendations like these, I must be missing something.
Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner?

Ok guys, this has been bugging me for years. Did WZ ever say anyhere what the inspiration was for this song? Is there a story behind it just another one of those black clouds that floated up from the bowels of WZ's twisted mind?

Ed
OK, Werewolves of London, I have heard this song. Looking for others now.

See what I mean? :banghead:

There are many out there that would love his music. They just never heard of him.
Warren Zevon - Werewolves Of London

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fooks
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
Werewolves of London
If you hear him howling around your kitchen door
Better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again
Werewolves of London
Hes the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately hes been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
Hell rip your lungs out, Jim
Id like to meet his tailor
Werewolves of London
Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vics
His hair was perfect
Werewolves of London
Draw blood

I got this from "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" (An Anthology) -

"In 1974 I ran off to Spain and got a job in an Irish bar called the Dubliner, in Sitges, on the Costa Brava. The proprietor was a piratical ex-merc named David Lindell. He and I wrote this song at the bar one afternoon, over many jars." -Warren Zevon
